The Chabot Foundation threw its annual fall fundraiser this past Saturday, Nov. 1, raising $18,000 for the college.

Chabot went Monte Carlo at the Starlight Club in the Hayward City Hall Rotunda.

The faculty and staff turned out in their finest clothes mingling with the likes of Assembly member Mary Hiyashi, newly-elected City Council Member Anna May, and City Manager Greg Jones.

The event drew the largest campus turn-out so far for the annual fundraiser.

Although the rain put a damper on things, the event's coordinator Heidi Finberg felt the evening was a success, both in terms of fundraising and overall satisfaction for all attendees.

"Chabot Goes Monte Carlo at The Starlight Club was a complete success. Our guests enjoyed a glamorous evening of entertainment, delicious food and learning more about Chabot College," Finberg said.

"Hosting community events such as this is important for the campus and the foundation as it raises awareness of our programs and needs and offers an opportunity for business leaders to meet our faculty and staff."

Casino games were set up throughout the event with every guest starting out with 100 chips.

Guest Jack Papazian, who held the most chips, won a free poker party courtesy of 21 Fun Casino Company. The company also provided services for the event, including the roulette, poker, and blackjack tables.

The poker tournament winner was Tom Emig, who walked away with a weekend trip to Las Vegas for two.

Live Sinatra-era music filled City Hall while Chabot President Celia Barbarena enjoyed a dance with her husband, Ned Budlong, on the checkerboard floor.

A silent auction was also held with tables topped off with baskets full of food and coupons for events, half of which were donated by staff and faculty.

The food valued at over $4,000 was donated by Horatio's Restaurant for the sixth year.

More than 150 guests nibbled on spinach ravioli served by Chabot's radio station KCRH and dipped strawberries in a chocolate fountain.

Honored were past Chabot Foundation chairmen Marshall Mitzman, Richard Hong and John Gutierrez.

The three received the Gladiator award for their commitment to bringing resources to the campus while expanding Chabot's image throughout the Bay Area.
